Our History
The Softheat® brand was founded in 1922 by John Smith in Los Angeles, California. As an engineer, John saw firsthand how people struggled with sore muscles and arthritis pain. He dreamed of creating safe, lightweight heating devices that could provide soothing warmth right where people needed it most.
In John’s garage workshop, he began tinkering with flexible wires and fabrics that could hold heat. After months of trial and error, he successfully developed the first Softheat® electric heating pad. It was made with soft flannel and included an adjustable thermostat for customized heat control.
The heating pads were an instant hit with John’s community. Word began to spread, and orders started pouring in from across the country. Within a year, John had to move production out of his garage and into a small factory to meet demand.
In 1935, Softheat® pioneered the first electric blanket, revolutionizing the way people stayed cozy on cold winter nights. We introduced innovative safety features like overheat protection and low-voltage power to prevent fires. Our patented wiring system allowed the blankets to be safely machine washed and dried.
